Thinking With AI While Representing Yourself
Many people representing themselves turn to AI looking for answers — and that makes sense. Court systems are complex, language is dense, and the pressure to “get it right” can feel constant. Often, it feels like there isn’t time to be curious or skeptical. There’s urgency, fear of missing deadlines, and a sense that you need certainty now.
AI can help in real ways. It can translate unfamiliar language, summarize long documents, and help organize information. But it’s important to understand what’s actually happening when AI is useful — and when it isn’t.
In my own experience navigating civil court without an attorney, AI helped me most after I learned not to treat it as an authority. Early on, it made mistakes that I didn’t catch. It sounded confident when it was wrong. Those moments weren’t failures — they were reminders that AI doesn’t reason, and it doesn’t know your case or your court.
What made AI helpful wasn’t the tool itself. It was staying actively engaged. Questioning what it said. Asking it to check itself. Looking for inconsistencies. Verifying information through court websites and official sources. Keeping judgment human.
This can feel hard when time is limited. Curiosity and skepticism can seem like luxuries when you’re under pressure. But when working with AI, they aren’t optional — they’re protective. AI responds to how it’s used. When questions are careful, specific, and examined, its responses tend to be more useful. When questions are rushed or unexamined, its answers can sound confident without being reliable. In that sense, AI often mirrors the level of critical thinking brought to it — it doesn’t replace it.
Under time pressure or when feeling intimidated by the process, it’s tempting to accept confident answers — but curiosity and skepticism are what protect you when using AI.
Used this way, AI didn’t only give me information — it helped me organize my thinking. It became a way to slow down, see structure, and reduce overwhelm without rushing into action.
AI didn’t replace my thinking — it amplified it.
For people representing themselves, this distinction matters. AI can support understanding, but it can’t replace discernment. It can help you stay oriented, but it can’t decide what’s correct or safe to file.
Confidence without understanding can create new risks.
The goal isn’t to let AI think for you. It’s to use it as a tool while staying present, grounded, and responsible for your own participation.
When judgment stays human, AI can be supportive. When it replaces judgment, it can quietly work against you.
Staying engaged — not just informed — is what preserves agency in systems that are complex and often feel impersonal.
